Processed with VSCO with f2 preset

Ever been in a bit of a “funk” about which book to read next?  Well, let me introduce you to ‘The Blind Date Book Company’;

“Take a leap of faith – choose your next great read by just using the four words that describe each book.

Are you tired of reading the same old thing over and over again? Why not start a new adventure, fall in love with new characters or discover a whole new favourite genre?

Our Blind Date books are beautifully hand wrapped in brown paper with just a 4-word description of what the book is about – each book includes a teabag or coffee bag (a hot date!) for that perfect relaxing moment.

You could pick a Genre that you wouldn’t normally go for (this way you won’t buy a book that you already have) What have you got to lose?

The Blind Date Book Company also offer the perfect gift for that person that loves nothing more than to immerse themselves in a good book. Take the hassle out of choosing the ‘right’ book and surprise them with this unusual gift idea. Each book also comes with a love letter explaining the concept.”

“Choose between a pre-loved book or a brand new book – each pre-loved book is in a great used condition.

Pre-loved Books are £7.99 (plus postage)
New Books are £9.99 (plus postage)”

This brilliant idea is the third baby of Katy {also my Sister-in-Law, kind of…can I call you that?!}…and my book was delivered in person by the cutest little delivery boy ever…Billy.  I managed to put my beautifully wrapped book to one side for a while {blame Billy and his massively gorgeous eyes}, but an hour or so later, my curiosity was getting the better of me and I just had to find out which book I’d been sent.  Billy or no Billy.

First impressions; I loved the wrapping and the cute details as in the button and the tag, Yay to my hot date {Coffee} and I hadn’t heard of this book, which is the aim here!  High five to The Blind Date Book Co!

There are also gift boxes available – each one includes a mug, teabags/coffee bag a beautiful handmade bookmark and some local Handmade Shrewsbury Biscuits and of course a new Blind Date Book of your choice.  How great is that?!

Personally, I think the gift box or the book alone would be a lovely, lovely gift for someone who is a book lover.  I am one and I love receiving books as gifts.  All in all, The Blind Date Book Co gets a massive thumbs up from me.  These days my kindle is used for a film while in bed…or candy crush…did I really just admit to that last one?! ;)

Now to the book itself, ‘The Paying Guests’ by Sarah Waters;

“It is 1922, and London is tense. Ex-servicemen are disillusioned, the out-of-work and the hungry are demanding change. And in South London, in a genteel Camberwell villa, a large silent house now bereft of brothers, husband and even servants, life is about to be transformed, as impoverished widow Mrs Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances, are obliged to take in lodgers.

For with the arrival of Lilian and Leonard Barber, a modern young couple of the ‘clerk class’, the routines of the house will be shaken up in unexpected ways. And as passions mount and frustration gathers, no one can foresee just how far-reaching, and how devastating, the disturbances will be.”

I wasn’t too sure what to make of it at first but as the saying goes, “Never judge a book by its cover”.  It probably took me a few chapters to get into it but once I did, there was no putting it down.  A love story that has it all; passion, frustration, love, deceit…and murder.  The writer’s detail in the book makes it all believable but it did feel a bit like it was stretched out at the end while waiting for the outcome…and then I wasn’t too sure of the ending.  I’m not sure if I feel let down or just want to know what happens next…and maybe that’s the whole point of it.  Despite all of that, I really did enjoy it.

  1. Ahh you told me about this before I think it’s a brilliant idea! So many favourite books that it’s hard to pick just one but recently Life After Life by Kate Atkinson really blew me away. I read The Paying Guests last year and really liked it. I’ve never read any of her books before that and you’ve reminded me that I should look up some of her others!
