Gorge Walking // Open Door Adventure

Gorge walking is becoming a family favourite outdoor activity which we all look forward to and enjoy.  So, when we were given the chance to go with Open Door Adventure, we jumped at the chance!

Open Door Adventure is an Adventure Outdoor Pursuits & Team Building Centre based near St Asaph, Denbighshire, North Wales, a perfect setting in the heart of the Welsh countryside for all family outdoor pursuits.  The centre is used for all sorts, from a single activity like we did, or family holidays, stag/hen parties to residential team building events.  With the 10 bedroom mansion as its base, anything is possible!

Dave, the manager at Open Door, greeted us on our arrival, full of stories and most importantly, with the promise of a coffee before we started!

All coffee’d up, after a short drive, we were suited and booted and ready for our gorge walk!

Upon entering the river, it was clear that Dave only had one thing to do…to get us all as wet and as accustomed to the river temperature as soon as possible…there was only one thing for it…

We’re the four on the far right…if you look closely enough you can just make out the huge smiles on our faces!

With clear instructions before each “obstacle”, if you want to call them that, or part of the gorge walk, Dave soon had us all walking up the river dodging rocks, trees etc…scrambling up rocks…going under the water to come up between other rocks and then climb up them…walking across waterfalls…sliding down rocks, as in The Superman Slide!…pool jumping…again, Alf was my hero here, and not just mine as it turns out…there was a stag do in our group and I heard one of them say to his mate “If he does this, the pressure is on for me to got to do it!”…there was plenty of pools to swim about in and play games in too…with stops in between each part for us to catch our breath…or laugh at someone’s attempt at something!

Seriously good fun, with the most picturesque stops…

I wore Paul’s Go Pro and managed to get some footage…sadly, due to the battery, it didn’t get the jumps at the very end…so, here’s what I did get…notice Alf’s serious face at the beginning and how he is at the end!

If you’ve never had a go at Gorge Walking, I can’t recommend it enough for a bit of good fun!

And there’s plenty of companies around who do other outdoor activities too as well as Open Door Adventure…there’s Safe and Sound Outdoors, Pro Adventure, both based in Llangollen…TNR Coaching, Chirk… Kingswood Adventures, Mold…The Forge, Corwen…Woodland Skills Centre, Bodfari…Mountain Escapes etc etc.  For more information, check out this website for further information.

{serious face:  This post is part of a Routes to the Sea project supported by Denbighshire, Wrexham and Flintshire.  All words and thoughts are my own…including that cheesy grinned eleven year old, he’s all mine too!}
